Saudi Arabia Bans Expats From 12 Job Types

In a bid to offer more jobs to Saudi nationals, the kingdom has imposed restrictions on expats from working in 12 sectors. The decision was issued by the Saudi Minister for Labor and Social Development Ali Al-Ghafees.

The main purpose behind this is to decrease unemployment rate in Saudi Arabia which is now nearing the 12% mark.

Work Areas that Are Banned

The ban on expats working in these 12 working sectors will start from September, 2018. These are mostly sales jobs which include;

  1. Watch shops,
  2. Optical stores,
  3. Medical equipment stores,
  4. Electrical and electronics shops,
  5. Outlets selling car spare part,
  6. Building material shops,
  7. Outlets selling all types of carpets,
  8. Automobile and mobile shops,
  9. Shops selling home furniture and ready-made office material,
  10. Sale outlets of ready-made garments,
  11. Children clothes and men’s supplies,
  12. Household utensils shops and pastry shops.

Unemployment in Saudi Arabia has been on the rise during the last 12 months. The Saudi economy took a major hit following a global decrease in oil prices in the recent past. All of these moves are attempts to stabilize the Kingdom’s economy. For the same purpose, Saudi authorities started a crackdown against corruption and arrested several high profile individuals.

However, almost all of the individuals arrested, which included businessmen, members of royal families etc, have been released after initial inquiries. Saudi representatives revealed that more than $100 billion were recovered during the whole investigations.

  • All middle east are thinking negative. All countries are trying to earn money from expats. As if this is theft money what expats are earning. They should think positive and start new projects in order to grow their economy. What if in future, all nationals will replace expats and still they will have unemployment then what they will do??? in the end poor thinking

  • Also it is true that Arabs have never changed since 1500 years. it was said by Muhammad PBUH, that do not prefer Arabic on expats. All are same. But unfortunately, Arabs are poor. They are still standing at the same place and doing discrimination and claiming themselves as good Muslims…

      • been there and lived amoung them for 3 decades. i submit my vote 100%. THEY ARE BORN RACISTS. ANA WATANI. Ana Emirati, Ana Saudi, Ana Kuwaiti, Ana Qatari. let them fight over each other for their gold plated toilet seats and palaces.

  • There is too much poverty and unemployment there. They are doing good for their country. Btw, I am not a fan of Saudi Arabia nor like their intervention in our ciuntry politics.

  • Poorly written article, still using the tag line, falling prices ? just look at the oil baskets prices currently it all time near high even with middle east turmoil. but we still insists ti import oil for saudis rather than Iran
