Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 700 Series With AI & Smart Features

Qualcomm has announced a new 700 series of processors for mobile phones at the MWC. This series is meant to sit between, surprise, the high-end 800 series chips, and the mid-end 600-series phones, allowing some of the high-end features to cross-over on to premium midrange phones.

AI Feature Set

The high-end features here include AI, more efficiency in power management, as well as performance improvements.

The Snapdragon 700 Mobile Platform Series will bring premium tier technologies and features into more affordable devices.

While the 600-series smartphones (such as the new ZenFone 5 duo) come with AI enhancements of their own, the 700-series will reportedly double the AI processing speeds when compared to the contemporary Snapdragon 660. Also, it will use take 30-percent fewer resources to give the same output.

Better GPUs, Enhanced Camera Performance

That won’t be all, as users can also expect to see improved connectivity via Bluetooth 5.0 and carrier Wi-Fi features, faster-charging, courtesy of Quick Charge 4.0 which lets you charge 0-50% in just 15 minutes. Better power delivery can be expected through Kryo cores, rather than Cortex ones which are mainstream, alongside improved graphics thanks to newer Adreno GPUs.

Camera enhancements, which are usually under the spotlight when talking of AI, should improve even more when paired with Qualcomm’s depth-sensing Spectra Module ISP and more professional-grade camera features.

Availability

The 700-series chips will be delivered in the first half of this year, which should bring the first batch of devices to the market by the second half of this year. We should expect benchmarks, as well as cluster types, once the launch of the processors nears.

The chips could be Qualcomm’s way of retaining its top-spot in the market, where it is facing increasing competition from Samsung’s Exynos line of SoCs.
