Supreme Court (SC) has taken notice of Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) decision to shut down profitable routes, a decision that directly benefits Air Blue, a private airline. The ban on fresh recruitments has also been undertaken by the supreme court of the country.
This was stated in an SC ordered issued after a proceeding at Karachi register on March 31st.
In its order, the SC issued a notice to Federation of Pakistan, Chairman PIA, and Ministry of Defence to respond to the application.
The court also demanded comments on the closure of certain PIA profitable routes which have been recently given to other Airlines such as Air Blue. SC also asked the government to respond if it really intends to privatize PIA.
SC asked the concerned to file a report within one week and the matter be listed in the week commencing 9th April , 2018 at the Principal Seat, Islamabad.
PIA, after huge losses, announced the end of New York flights in October last year. The direct flight between Pakistan and USA was shut down for the first time in 56 years. After the closure of this route, rumors began spreading that this route was now being assigned to Air Blue.
Air Blue is a private airline of Pakistan, where current Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is a major shareholder.
The airline’s spokesperson has denied the existence of any trans-Atlantic flight because Air Blue doesn’t have the aircraft and the capacity to start such a long route.
