Pakistan Has the Largest Percentage of Young People in Its History

Currently having the highest population of youth, Pakistan is termed as one of the youngest countries in the world and second youngest in South Asia, right below Afghanistan.

As per the new National Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pakistan, the country now boasts the largest percentage of youth in the world.

64% of the total population is below is below the age of 30 while 29% of it belongs to the age bracket of 15 to 29 years.

Having a huge percentage of youth is a great advantage for the country if managed properly. If the government invests in its youth with education, employment and other opportunities, a country can witness great economic growth.

The report says, “if engaged and utilized properly, the youth can serve as catalysts for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

The report revolves around the challenges Pakistan faces in human development and lack of opportunities for the youth. It also comes in with solutions by getting into the core of this issue to resolve these problems.

Titled Unleashing the Potential of a Young Pakistan, the report was written by the dean of the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University Dr Adil Najam and Dr Faisal Bari, associate professor of Economics at the Lahore University of Management Sciences.

Dr Najam outlined that the Human Development Index (HDI) at the subnational level clearly delineates the imbalances in choice and opportunities available for the people.

Islamabad has a high HDI whereas FATA has the lowest. In a nutshell, Punjab has a high HDI overall while Balochistan has the lowest.

Out of 195 countries, only 14 invest even less than Pakistan does in education. Pakistan’s enrolment rate growth rate is just 0.92%. At this rate, it will take another 60 years to get all children into schools.

Dr Najam said,

Young people between the ages of 15 and 29 make up 41.6pc of Pakistan’s total labour force and four million people reach the working age in the country every year. The report says that 90pc of the youth do not have access to recreational facilities, 15pc have access to the internet, 8pc to radio and 48pc own a mobile phone.

The Interior Minister agrees to the part of including youth in all affairs and decisions.

Youth of any country is very fragile, if not in safe hands, it can lead to a destruction of the country, says of the Japanese Ambassador Takashi Hurai.
