The spectrum auction for Next Generation Mobile Services in Pakistan was conducted in April 2014, since then mobile broadband services have transformed people’s lives in Pakistan. By this auction of Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS), the telecom sector achieved new heights of success.

Apart from the direct revenue contribution by the telecom industry, telecommunication empowers other verticals of the industry. With the introduction of 3G/4G services in Pakistan, many businesses have transformed in the last couple of years. The Internet has transformed the way we shop. Online Shopping portals have helped gain the attention of E-Commerce giants like Ali Baba to invest in Pakistan, this will help the local industry to grow.
Services like UBER and Careem would not have been possible without the Mobile Broadband. E-Services have transformed our lives and have helped improve and optimize our lifestyles. These advancements have impacted lives of millions across the country.
Telecom operators are the main drivers of this transformation. We have four major telecom operators Jazz, Zong, Telenor, and Ufone. All the operators have played an integral role in developing 3G and 4G users. PTA strictly monitors the user growth and experience of all the operators and regularly publishes telecom indicators.
If we compare these indicators, Jazz is leading the pack with 55 million subscribers. Then, it’s Telenor, with 43 million subscribers, Zong with 31 million subscribers and Ufone with 20 Million subscribers but only providing 3G services.
In 2018, all the operators’ focus would be on developing 4G user base, with Zong leading the 4G development at a rapid pace in Pakistan with 6.5 Million subscribers. 4G is a new generation of cellular networks creating a massive impact on the way we communicate.
Speed is the soul of 4G and with advancements in terminal devices specially fixed wireless access devices like Mi-Fi and CPE’s, 4G would be enhancing Pakistan’s broadband industry. 4G services were first launched by Zong and ever since the trend has spread like wildfire.
Jazz and Telenor are also pushing for aggressive 4G rollouts. 4G networks are key for the survival of operators as it generates new revenue streams with a variety of services and an evolution path for the future.
As telecom networks get more complex and market competition becomes more severe, network technology has a big impact on end-user experience and loyalty. To capitalize on the vast opportunities in Pakistan, operators need to deliver a better scenario-based service and accelerate their return on investment.
Digital transformation is a huge focus for the telecom industry due to the gradual decline in revenue from traditional services. So, the industry needs to transform by improving efficiency, and by introducing a whole lot of new services using 4G as its backbone.

“In a recent development Jazz launched 3G on its 900 MHz frequency with the help of Huawei. Reportedly Huawei is helping Jazz to deploy its CloudAIR technology which will enable jazz to offer GSM, UMTS and LTE services on all available bands.”
Yes, this is real, Jazz has deployed 3g on 900 MHz, but not 4g untill now.
So do you know in which areas it has been done? Any insight on Jazz VoLTE??? Testing was done more than a year ago.
