The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help Pakistan generate over 5,000 Megawatts of electricity in next 5-10 years.
The energy will be produced by installing micro-hydroelectric power (MHP) plants in off-grid areas in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as part of ADB’s “Access to Clean Energy Investment Program.”
Under the same program, 2,330MW will be produced through solar power plants in Punjab by 2026.
According to ADB, about 30% of the solar panels provided under this project will be installed at girls’ schools. Additionally, 500 female healthcare facilities will benefit from the project as well.
The Project’s Outcome
ADB wants its Clean Energy Investment project in Pakistan to achieve the following outcomes:
- Expand access to renewable energy, notably micro-hydropower (MHP) plants in rural off-grid areas of KPK, and decentralized solar plants for education and primary health care facilities (PHFs) in KPK and Punjab;
- Provide women and girls with increased opportunities to obtain energy services and benefits;
- Enhance institutional capacity to foster sustainability; and
- Promote public sector energy efficiency in Punjab.
The proposed Asian Development (ADB) assistance program will contribute to Pakistan’s national goal of enhanced energy security. The program will be implemented over a period of 5-10 years and will support the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Punjab (GoKPK and GoPb) to achieve increased access to sustainable and more reliable electricity services for vulnerable communities – Project Overview
The report, which was released on World Environment Day, adds that the strategic agenda of the project is bring in environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The project is expected to benefit 240,000 households and 2.6 million students by giving them access to clean energy.
ADB will provide the loan for the project as well as the technical assistance fund. $325 million will be given to Pakistan as a loan while $0.75 million will arrive under the Technical Assistance Special Fund.
