Xiaomi Redmi 6 and 6A Now Official at Rock Bottom Prices

Xiaomi’s upcoming budget midrangers have already been in the rumor mill, most of their design elements and specifications have already been leaked.

However, the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A have finally been made official by the company, and will soon hit Xiaomi stores. According to previous rumors, Redmi 6 was expected to have a notched display but seems like only its larger “plus” version, or the alleged Redmi 6 Plus, will get a cutout on the display with a higher screen-to-body ratio.

The two new devices are compact, simplistic, and have taller displays this time. Let’s dig in,

Design & Display

Redmi 6

Xiaomi Redmi 6

Unlike the leaked notched display unit, the Redmi 6 looks like a well-rounded budget midranger consisting of a simplistic design, fair bezel size, and the trendy dual cameras. The body has a metal finish, the Redmi 6 is available in several vibrant color options as well. There’s a generic cosmetic line on the rear, a horizontal dual camera array, and the fingerprint sensor is rear-mounted.

This time, it has a 5-45-inch display with the same aspect ratio as its predecessor, Redmi 5 and an HD+ (720 x 1440) resolution. Display technology is IPS LCD.

The entry-level Redmi 6A has almost the same neat design with a metal finish, similar antenna lines, and slightly curved edges. It also gets rounded corners for the display, but just like before, there’s no visible fingerprint sensor. The camera array is horizontally aligned as well, but it consists of a single lens set up instead.

Interestingly, it carries the same display panel as the Redmi 6 sporting an HD+ (720 x 1440) resolution, measuring 5.45-inches, at an 18:9 aspect ratio.

Hardware & Storage

Redmi 6

Xiaomi’s latest midranger packs a 12nm Helio P22 chipset, octa-core, clocked at 2.0 GHz. The new SoC was recently launched by Mediatek, it is equivalent to a Snapdragon 625 in terms of performance but promises more battery life.

It comes with either 3 or 4 GB RAM, while storage options are 32 (with 3 GB RAM) and 64 GB (with 4 GB RAM).

Redmi 6A

As you’d expect, this one gets a less powerful Helio A22 chipset but has the same octa-core configuration with 2.0 GHz clock speed. The Redmi 6A has 2 GB RAM, there are no additional RAM options available. The new A22 chipset is Mediatek’s first A series SoC, it has special power saving features for entry-level phones.

Just like last year’s Redmi 5A, this one also has 16 GB internal storage, and just like RAM it does not get any extension options.

Camera & Software

Redmi 6

The higher-end Redmi 6 has a dual camera set up on the rear. The dark horizontal array houses a 12 MP main and 5 MP secondary sensor. Just like most smartphones in the market these days, the primary shooter pairs with the secondary depth sensor to deliver realistic background blur. Surely, AI beautification features and other gimmicks are also available. The front camera can manage up to 5 MP photos.

The software is Android Oreo, with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 10 skin on top.

Here are some camera samples shared by Xiaomi at the launch event:

Again, it will run Android Oreo out of the box running Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 10 that promises advanced photography features for even single lens entry-level phones.

Battery, Price, & Availability

Redmi 6 has a non-removable 3,ooo mAh battery with 10W charging. Redmi 6A also houses a 3,000 mAh battery – official figures promise 19 days of standby time. Additionally, both phones use microUSB 2.0 instead of a USB Type-C slot.

Xiaomi’s budget lineup is highly popular for its decent price tags, Redmi 6 has been priced differently for its two variants – CNY 799 (~Rs. 14,500) for 32 GB and CNY 999 (~Rs. 18,000) for the 64 GB option in Grey, Blue, Gold, Rose Gold.

Unlike the former, Redmi 6A costs CNY 599 (~Rs. 10,800) and comes in only one 2/16 GB variant, its color options are the same as Redmi 6.

These phones will initially be launched for the Chinese market, on June 15th, but do note that international specs may vary. Xiaomi usually swaps the SoC with a Qualcomm processor for the international market. These phones are also highly likely to launch in Pakistan in the coming days.
