Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Xiaomi Mi Max 3 [Rumor Roundup]

Xiaomi is set to launch the Mi Max 3, a budget midranger with a large screen and battery, tomorrow on July 19.

It has already been in the rumor mill and most of its specifications have been leaked through multiple sources including TENAA listings. Other than that, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun himself posted Mi Max 3’s specifications on his official Weibo account so we know the exact details ahead of launch.

So, what can you expect from Xiaomi’s upcoming midranger? The predecessor, Mi Max 2 proved to perform quite well due to its decent internal hardware and gigantic display. In particular, the lineup is popular for featuring giant batteries.

Without further ado, let’s check out some specs and pictures.

Design & Display

These images were recently leaked online. As seen in the “About Phone” menu, this is definitely the Mi Max 3 and its specifications can also be seen. The rear finish looks metal, and the design highly resembles Xiaomi’s recent budget lineup.

The company is going for a plain rear finish, with antenna lines on the top edge, but with a taller 18:9 display this time. Unsurprisingly, the fingerprint sensor has been mounted on the rear, while the bezel size for the Mi Max 3 has been reduced to house the taller display.

Display size is expected to measure a massive 6.9-inches, and according to Lei Jun, is more “enhanced” than before. This is a significant upgrade over the previous Mi Max 2, which had a 6.44-inch display instead.

Hardware, Battery, & Storage

Just today, Xiaomi’s CEO posted Mi Max 3’s specifications in a social media post. We already knew some specifications, but those have been confirmed now a day ahead of launch. So just like before, the midrange phablet is maintaining a Snapdragon 600 series chipset and impressive storage options.

As seen in the post, this time it’s going to be a Snapdragon 636 – a 14nm processor that promises good performance and good battery life. Xiaomi later posted another teaser that gives more details on the Mi Max 3’s RAM and storage. It’s going to come with either 4 or 6 GB RAM, and storage options of 64 GB and 128 GB.

According to some rumors, the higher-end Mi Max 3 is going to come with a 10nm Snapdragon 710 instead – which is Qualcomm’s latest midrange processor – but there’s no official confirmation on this as of yet. If Xiaomi does go for the 710, the Mi Max 3 will be among the first few devices to have this chipset.

These specs are quite standard for smartphones of this category, though the feature that sets the Mi Max 3 apart from other midrangers is its battery size. Xiaomi is adding a whopping 5500 mAh battery to the package which is almost twice as large as batteries present in most smartphones these days.

It should pair well with the low-resource internals and the moderate processor. Screen resolution (FHD+, probably) is also high enough to provide the optimum blend of viewing clarity and battery life.

Camera & Software

Another new thing in the Mi Max 3 is its dual camera set up. The Mi Max 2 featured a single 12 MP lens on the rear, Xiaomi is updating the lineup with a 12 MP + 5 MP dual camera configuration for the Mi Mix 3. As you’d expect, the 12 MP sensor acts as the primary shooter and does the heavy lifting. The 5 MP sensor only adds depth to produce high-quality bokeh effect.

For the front camera, it’s going to be an 8 MP sensor with all the latest AI selfie features. Additionally, the built-in AI can also detect 206 different scenes, is capable of facial recognition, and also has object recognition.

Software is highly likely to be Android 8.1 Oreo, with Xiaomi’s MIUI skin on top. The OS has a number of proprietary features as well as some full-screen support gestures for large devices. It’s among the fastest Android skins available in the market.

There’s no word on the price as of yet, but according to rumors, it’s expected to be somewhere around CNY 1,699 (~Rs. 32,000) for the 4/64 GB model and CNY 1,999 (~Rs. 38,000) for the 6/128 GB memory variant, which is not bad at all for a phone with a 6.9-inch display and a 5,500 mAh powerbank-sized battery.
