SBP Warns Scammers Are Calling People to Steal Their Bank Account Details

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has warned the general public against sharing their personal and account details over the phone, especially to callers impersonating SBP personnel as phone bankers or officials of the central bank. Sharing account details with these scammers could cause them heavy losses as their details could be used for the purpose of money transaction illegally.

There are reports that fake telephone calls are being made to the public by individuals impersonating officials of State Bank of Pakistan who are seeking personal information from people. These scammers ask for information such as the CNIC number, bank account number, passwords, etc. on the pretext of verification of banks account. In case of non-compliance, these scammers resort to threats. They say that if such details are not provided, the accounts will be closed or frozen.

It has been also observed that fraud emails of different banks are being sent to users having fake website links of the banks which ask customers to put their details regarding name, CNIC, emails and others. The obtained data is used to siphon off money from accounts of customers to someone else’s accounts.

Notice for General Public

The General Public is informed that SBP does not seek such verifications directly with clients of commercial banks. Time and again, the State Bank of Pakistan informs the general public through circulars, brochures and public awareness advertisements that people should beware of different kinds of frauds. Furthermore, the public should not share their personal or financial information such as their bank account number, PIN, ID, password, etc. with anyone.

The public is advised to be vigilant of such activities and inform law enforcement agencies about the fraudsters. Furthermore, they should immediately approach their bank in case of any loss arising due to the illegal use of their credentials/information.

Commercial banks need to alert their customers with the help of social as well as conventional media channels.  A couple of banks such as Dubai Islamic Bank and MCB Bank, have launched an awareness campaign in this regard.

Banks should also coordinate with law enforcement agencies to control such activities, recover any losses as they occur,  and arrest the criminals involved in such practices.

Please Do Not Visit Dubai Islamic Bank Fake Website

  • Banks are at fault here too because they authenticate their customer’s identity using publicly available data like their CNIC number, mother’s name and date of birth. These things are not secret and cannot be used to authenticate a person’s identity over the phone. We wouldn’t have had to go through biometric re-verification of SIMs if these details were enough to authenticate a person’s identity. Yet for some reason banks are allowed to get away with these lax procedures.
