Skype Preview Now Lets You Record Calls & Supports SMS Messages

The new Skype Preview is all set to roll out for Android with a couple of new updates. The latest update lets you send and receive SMS messages on your phone through Skype on your desktop, and lets you record calls from your phone.

It introduces SMS connect, which syncs your mobile device with your laptop or PC, letting you send texts from your PC or Mac.

SMS messaging includes two options:

  1. You can now use Skype SMS to send and receive text messages on a Skype account using Skype credit.
  2. Send SMS message using “SMS connect” which will set the default SMS app to Skype, thereby allowing you to send and receive text messages on Desktop.

Microsoft’s official PR reads,

Use Skype on your PC or Mac to read and reply to your Android phone’s SMS messages. To get started, tap the button to install Skype on your Android phone.

Updates for Skype Preview on Windows 10 haven’t come out yet but reports suggest that updates will be coming out soon. Director of the design of Microsoft’s Outlook and Skype, Peter Skillman said this via a tweet:

Another small quality of life feature added to Skype Preview is the ability to record calls on your phone. You had to rely on a third party app for that previously.

Note that Skype Preview is currently listed as “unreleased” on the Google Play Store, as the app is still unfinished. For iOS, you have to request an invite directly from Skype’s website.
