Samsung Galaxy S10 Series Will Come with In-Display Fingerprint Sensors

It’s only been a few weeks since the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and leaks are already pouring in for the upcoming flagship. In fact, details of the upcoming Galaxy S10 have been leaking since after the launch of the Galaxy S9 back in February this year.

The Galaxy S10 series is also hinted to launch in February and will come in three different variants. The differences will be in screen sizes, number of cameras and obviously the price. However, what won’t be different is a crucial biometric security sensor.

In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

Rumors of Samsung using an in-display fingerprint scanner can be traced back to before the launch of the Galaxy S9 where a few unreliable leaks pointed towards the fact the S9 might arrive with an in-display fingerprint scanner. When that didn’t happen, many hoped that the Note 9 will be one to come out with the upgraded biometric security. However, we now have the Note 9 and the in-display fingerprint scanner is nowhere to be found on it.

Now, a reliable leak received by Sammobile, reveals that all 3 variants of the upcoming Galaxy S10 will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. So, if you were worried about missing anything new if you went with the lowest variant of the Galaxy S10, don’t be.

However, not all 3 variants will have the same type of in-display fingerprint scanners. The top two variants of the S10 will have ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, like the one we’ve seen on the Honor 10. Samsung will be using Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, while the entry-level variant will be using an optical fingerprint scanner.

Ultrasonic vs Optical Fingerprint Scanners

While both of these scanners are used to scan your fingerprints, the way they do it differs and also affects the accuracy.

An ultrasonic fingerprint scanner works by emitting an ultrasonic pulse against the fingerprint and a receiver ends up making a detailed 3D image by making out the pores, ridges and other details on your finger.

Perhaps the best advantage of an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner over a capacitive or optical one is that you can unlock your phone even when your fingers are wet.

An optical fingerprint scanner works in a much more simpler way by capturing an optical image and using algorithms to make out your fingerprints.

It is a slower method of unlocking your phone, not to mention that it isn’t that secure either, especially when compared to other types of fingerprint scanners available.

It will be interesting to see how Samsung tackles these obstacles with the Galaxy S10.
