Qualcomm’s aptX Codec Will Make Bluetooth Headphones Much Better Than Before

With the headphone jack’s availability declining and wireless headphones still not up to scratch, Qualcomm is unveiling a new codec, called aptX Adaptive, which should give the technology the chance a new lease at life.

Perhaps the biggest thing in aptX’s favor is the support for Android 9.0 Pie, which should help it get to the market immediately.

The aptX Adaptive codec is said to be, well, adaptive in terms of bit-rate to the kind of content being played on the connected handset. This dynamic nature helps the supporting headsets provide a more optimal experience depending on the movie you’re watching or the game you’re playing.

Further, the codec takes into account the external radio frequency environment, which means it’ll be able to detect when there are a lot of signals around, compared to when there are few. Latency is another aspect which has been improved to reduce the lag between connected devices.

Does it Work?

Whether this translates to improved quality for wireless headphones remains to be seen, especially in devices which are older and don’t support the latest codecs or come with the upgraded antenna, however, this is a good start. Backward compatibility with aptX and aptX HD is still on board though.

Devices with support for the codec will be released by next year, while Android 9 Pie support will come in December. The upcoming Snapdragon 855 will likely be among the first to bring support to aptX the masses, so you’ll have to wait until 2019 to actually try it out.

  • Qualcomm upcoming Snapdragon 855 apt X Codec makes Bluetooth Headphones much better than before with launch by 2019 the time the regulatory authority will be evaluating trails of 5G spectrum in Pakistan. The 5G spectrum in early evaluation was banned in Australia by Huawei Technologies for security reasons. We hope Qualcomm will comply with 5G trails in transparent evaluation by the Government.
