Close Aide of Ahsan Iqbal Arrested for Corruption in Multi-Billion Rupee Project

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested former Director General (DG) Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera for his alleged corruption in the Narowal Sports City project.

Ganjera is told to be a close aide of former minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, who proposed the idea of the mega project in his home constituency.

The former DG PSB is accused of financial embezzlements and misuse of power to favour certain contractors that used low-quality material worth Rs2.5 billion in the project.

It was reported that Ganjera and the two board officials were arrested from a hotel in Islamabad.

The FIA officials reportedly invited the trio for lunch and arrested them in a dramatic move. Some TV reports say the federal agency is now stretching its investigation to former federal ministers, Riaz Hussain Pirzada and Ahsan Iqbal. Both were very closely involved in the multi-billion project.

But the problem does not end here for Iqbal. In May this year, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has also approved an inquiry against the former minister.

NAB’s official presser read that Chairman Justice retied Javed Iqbal ordered an inquiry “to verify the complaints against the alleged misappropriation of government funds — a staggering six billion rupees — in the construction of the Narowal Sports City Project (NSCP).”

The case may land Ahsan Iqbal into big trouble as, according to NAB, he managed to get a special allocation of funds for the multi-billion project in such a small town ignoring metropolitan cities.

The latest report of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) suggests that out of Rs. 2.9 billion of the project’s total cost, over Rs 2.5 billion have been already spent and the remaining amount was dispensed for the upcoming fiscal year.
