New Trains Earned Rs. 150 Million in Three Months: Sheikh Rasheed

The Federal Minister for Railways, Sheikh Rasheed, has stated that the department earned Rs. 150 million in just 100 days from 20 new trains.

Sheikh Rasheed told this to the National Assembly in a written response during Questioning Hour on Wednesday.

Railways minister stated in his reply that the decision to increase the train fares was taken to reduce the department’s deficit, which had gone up due to the rise in salaries and pensions of employees.

Sheikh Rasheed told the National Assembly that Pakistan Railways (PR) is now providing a 50% discount to elderly citizens over 65 years of age and free travel services to those above 75 years.

He further mentioned that during his five-month tenure, PR had recovered 52 KM of tracks by utilizing other sources.

“We’re now replacing the 1681-KM long double track from Karachi to Peshawar to improve its performance,” he added.

In his New Year resolution, the Railways minister had vowed to launch 20 more trains during 2019. He also threatened to remove Railways employees who do not perform their duties efficiently.

It should be mentioned here that Pakistan Railways had earned an extra Rs. 1.5 billion in profit in the first 100 days of the PTI government.
