Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has discontinued its flight operations for Japan, the airline announced on Monday. The last Tokyo-bound flight left on Sunday.
A spokesman of the national flag-carrier said that the decision was compulsory as the airline had been incurring heavy losses on this route.
He said “there were fewer passengers travelling to Japan” and because empty PIA planes were being taken to Japan.
The decision apparently did not go right with the Pakistani community in Tokyo as a large number of people staged a protest at the airport against the airline’s decision. The protesters demanded that the flights to Japan should be restored.

Previously, PIA’s aircraft flew from Islamabad to Tokyo as part of the Islamabad-Beijing-Tokyo route. But, according to the latest development, the national airline will not continue its flight from Beijing to Tokyo.
The new PIA management has taken several such steps to revamp the loss-making airline. The management has also dropped routes to Dhaka, New York and now to Tokyo due to losses. It has also started flights to new/previously suspended routes such as Sharjah, Doha, Muscat, and Kuala Lumpur.
Due to these changes, the national flag-carrier has earned Rs. 100 billion over the last year, a report circulating on media stated.
