Google is now accepting applications for its 15th Google Summer of Code (GSoC) starting today. The deadline for applications is April 9, 2019.
GSoC is an international program that aims to introduce student developers to open source software development. It is a three-month program that begins during the semester break to enable interested students.
The selected developers connect with the mentors (the participant open source organizations) to work on a particular project. The program also offers a stipend and an unmatched exposure to real-life software development and the open-source community.
As mentioned earlier, it is an opportunity to get real-world experience, which most of the students lack during their education. It will not only connect the students with the software development and open source community but also give an opportunity to work with leading professionals.
The opportunities for learning, exposure, and networking with the experts and professional will be aplenty. Another good reason to apply is that the students will receive a stipend of $3000 (Rs. 420,000).
Besides the money, the GSoC experience (though not acceptable as an internship) will look good on the resume. It is an opportunity to earn and learn which is why the number of Pakistani students partaking in the program is increasing every year. In fact, GSoC 2018 saw its first-time finalists from Pakistan.
The eligibility criteria for this program is not tough. A student has to be 18 years old, enrolled or accepted into an accredited institution—be it undergraduate, masters, or Ph.D. programs. You can go through the remaining student terms and conditoins here.
The application date will close on April 9 while the accepted students will be announced on May 6. the complete timeline of the program can be reached here.
