Fortnite Creator Epic Games Acquires ‘Rocket League’ Developer Psyonix

Fortnite creator, Epic Games, has announced that it has acquired indie game developer Psyonix – well known for its widely popular video game; Rocket League.

The deal was settled for an unspecified amount and is expected to close by the end of May. As a result, Psyonix says that it will have access to more resources to support Rocket League’s e-sports scene and it will help the game expand in ways it couldn’t before. The game will be brought to the Epic Games Store by the end of 2019.

This means that the game is likely to be removed from the Steam store. Epic didn’t comment about the matter saying that it has “no announced plans” to stop selling the game on Steam but the customers will continue to get support. So existing owners of the game don’t need to worry as they will still be able to play the game with their existing copies and will continue to get support including downloadable content, future patches etc.

The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that such a deal was welcomed by both parties. Epic and Psyonix have a long-standing relationship ever since Psyonix was founded back in 2001. The two companies have a history of working together; namely with Unreal Engine based games such as Unreal Tournament, Gears of War and Mass Effect.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said, “Psyonix has always been a part of the Epic family, and we’re happy to make it official. We have great respect for how Psyonix has built an excellent team and an incredible community around Rocket League”
