‘Nestlé Cares’ Launches Beach Cleaning Drive on World Ocean Day

Celebrating World Ocean Day, Nestlé Pakistan launched its global employee volunteer program ‘Nestlé Cares’ with a beach cleaning drive at Sea View Beach, Karachi.

Over 80 percent of pollutants going into the ocean come from activities on land. Natural processes and human activities along the coastlines and far inland affect the health of the ocean. Unprecedented damage is being done to the world’s delicate ecosystems causing oceans and the life within and around to suffer the most.

Employees of Nestlé Pakistan have taken upon themselves to do their bit for a waste-free future. Over 100 volunteers, including employees of Nestlé Pakistan, representatives from National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH) and Consumer Association of Pakistan (CAP) and participants from the Civil society joined hands as responsible citizens of the world to clear the bay and beyond.

Making continuous efforts through efficiencies and new technologies, Nestlé has an ambitious goal and is all set to conduct activities and operations that can lead to reducing the environmental impact to zero.

The organization is introducing various initiatives in its manufacturing units and beyond, adhering to its core values of enhancing the quality of life and contributing to a healthier future.

The proliferation of pollutants in the last several decades has been extraordinary. From pesticides, herbicides, to chemical fertilizers, detergents, oil, sewage, plastics, and other solids, everything is dumped into the oceans without much thought. This harms the environment and its inhabitants in the most unfathomable ways. Experts say that almost every piece of plastic ever made is still on the planet in some way or the other and around 5 trillion pieces of plastic afloat in our oceans worldwide.

Nestlé believes that with the right approach, plastic packaging can be collected or recycled without having a detrimental impact. Nestlé’s ambition is that by 2025, 100% of its packaging should be recyclable or reusable.

More than 2.6 billion people worldwide depend on the ocean for their primary source of protein which essentially means that our bodies are consuming the hazardous components without us even realizing it.

Drowning down the polluted ocean, the time for the world to awaken and humans to act was yesterday. But, as they say ‘it’s never too late’, the battle is still not over. Ambitious efforts by individuals, organizations and governments across the globe can help counter the challenge.

Nestlé Cares aims to educate the masses about the threat and how every effort counts to make a difference for a cleaner and greener planet. This is a good starting point for others to realize the critical need for stopping what seems to be conquering the once pristine ocean life.

As a partner, Nestlé Pakistan is contributing towards the government’s vision of a ‘Clean & Green Pakistan’ and in effect a ‘Clean and Green World’.

We can’t filter the oceans. That’s humanly impossible. But, we can start to stop littering it. Nestlé Pakistan just got the ball rolling showing that Nestlé Cares.

It’s about time the world shows how much it cares.
