Qatar Offers to Upgrade Five Major Airports in Pakistan

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting to discuss an offer by Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to upgrade five major airports in Pakistan.

The Emir offered to upgrade the airports with state of the art, international standard facilities. He has offered monetary and technical support on behalf of his country.

Islamabad has yet to decide what to do with the offer. The meeting to discuss the offer comprises Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan and officials of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The prospects of outsourcing the airports’ services to foreign contractors have also been discussed. The CAA has shown reservations regarding outsourcing.

Earlier, an aviation division spokesperson said that the system will be outsourced but the operational and regulatory control will remain with the government. CAA’s regulatory functions will be separated from the estate and airport management.
