Google has introduced an Advanced Protection Program for Chrome, which protects high-profile users who are at risk of getting hacked e.g. journalists, politicians, business leaders, etc.
If you’re enrolled in Google’s Advanced Protection Program, you will now get better security and protection. The browser will give you extra warnings and even block downloads to protect you.
What is Google Advanced Protection Program?
This program provides extra security and protection to any Google account that is at risk of targeted attacks. Users who are a part of this program already receive protection against malware “beyond Gmail’s standard, industry-leading safeguards”.
To turn the feature on, the user included in the protection program simply needs to turn on sync in Chrome, and they will automatically start receiving better protection.
If a user tries to download a file that Chrome finds potentially dangerous, the browser will prompt you with warnings and even block the download.
Google notes that this extra layer of protection was a much-needed feature as “attackers are shifting their strategies to threaten Advanced Protection users outside of email with linked malware and ‘drive-by downloads’ where users unknowingly download harmful software onto their devices.”
The program also has other features, such as requiring two physical security keys for login (one acts as a backup). Once you set it up, the program will require you to use a key in addition to your password for logging into your account.
