Doubling down on its austerity drive, the government has imposed a ban on the purchase of all kinds of vehicles and new recruitments in the federal ministries and divisions.
The ban will continue throughout the current fiscal year, with only motorcycle purchases allowed.
The Ministry of Finance has issued an office memorandum, which has also barred government departments from buying more than one magazines or newspapers.

Principal accounting officers have been tasked to control the utility expenses at the offices and also to try minimizing the maintenance expenses of government buildings, vehicles, and other assets. They’ve been ordered to remain strictly within the allocated budget.

This decision was made to reduce the country’s budget deficit due to the IMF’s recent conditional loan. The government had taken austerity measures in the previous fiscal year as well, such as reducing the refreshment budget, which didn’t yield the desired results.
The Finance Ministry has formed a seven-member committee under additional secretary finance (expenses) which will approve the purchase of vehicles if necessary.
