Misbah-ul-Haq Steps Down from Cricket Committee, Applies for Head Coach Position

After much contemplation, former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has applied for national cricket team’s head coach position.

Misbah was torn between the chief selector and head coach position and the 45-year-old has decided to go for the coaching option.

To successfully apply for the position, Misbah has also stepped down from the cricket committee position, which would have been considered a conflict of interest otherwise.

Speaking about the matter, Misbah said:

You can expect strict competition for the position [of head coach. I know many highly qualified people have applied for the post of head coach.

Other contenders for the head coach position include Rashid Latif and Dean Jones.

A source close to PCB claimed that the board’s preference lies with hiring a local coach. The source claimed:

Foreign cricketers have also applied for key slots of head coach, batting coach, and bowling coach, but PCB’s preference was to hire the local coaches for the team.

Previously, former World Cup winner Ramiz Raja spoke against appointing Misbah-ul-Haq as the head coach. He said that Misbah has a ‘defensive approach’ and appointing someone who waits for the opponent to make a mistake wouldn’t be a wise move.
