Here’s Why Alkaline Water is Good for Health

You feel thirsty, you fill up a glass of water and drink it. Thirst quenched! Ever thought about what goes into your body to lead you to the process? While you know you are thirsty after vigorous physical activity, you may not know why that glass of water is so fulfilling.

Up to 60% of the adult human body is water. Our bodies rely on a balance of fluids, blood vitamins, minerals, hormones and much more. Any imbalance can lead to dehydration or overhydration, signaling the body to maintain the fluid intake or release any excess liquids.

While it’s clear that hydration can help lubricate and cushion joints, aid digestion and blood flow, flush out waste and keep your immune system healthy, educating yourself on what’s exactly in that cup, can, or bottle of water before you drink it is essential to make the right choice.

What is Alkaline Water?

The growing trend of this smart water with boosted with pH levels across the globe has got people talking about how is it a healthier option than your typical bottled water.

In simple terms, it is water that has pH levels higher than 7. PH is a central measurable parameter of our body’s well-being, like blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. It is a scale used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH of pure water is 7, in general, water with a pH lower than 7 is considered acidic, and a pH greater than 7 is considered basic or alkaline.

The higher the pH level the more alkaline, or basic the fluid is, the lower the pH level, the more acidic it is. Balanced pH levels allow the human body to function to the best of its biochemical ability. Alkaline Water helps remove the acidic content and hydrates your body.

Why is Alkaline Water a healthier choice?

To understand how it is a healthier choice, we need to understand how the human body works. In simple terms, our body strives to maintain a balance called homeostasis. Homeostasis is the state of steady internal physical and chemical conditions maintained by human bodies. This dynamic state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for our bodies and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits.

While very high alkaline levels are not good for us, high acidic levels are extremely hazardous for a body. In this day and age, our diet is typically filled with refined sugars, hydrogenated oils, excess sodium, high-fructose, chemical additives, pesticides, and hyper-processed foods that can all contribute to an overproduction of acid disturbing the ideal pH levels and fostering a body environment where diseases can thrive.

In our fast-paced lives today, we eat all kinds of foods that are extremely acidic, which is why nutritionists and diet experts all over the world stress the importance of a diet that can balance out our bodies’ alkalinity level.

A well-balanced diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in grains, toxic processed foods, sugar, and meat, along with alkaline water will sustain the perfect pH levels for a healthy body.

Prevention is always better than a cure, and in a country like Pakistan where we are yet to make “health” a priority, it is about time we start educating ourselves on what could be the starting point. A healthy lifestyle is influenced by healthy air, healthy water, balanced fiber-rich diet, adequate sleep, regular physical work out and stress-free environments. Let’s start with something as simple as water, which is clean, mineral-rich and alkaline.
