A total of 2,744 third-party damage and pipeline rupture incidents were recorded in Pakistan’s gas transmission and distribution network during FY2024–25, resulting in significant gas losses and financial damage, according to official data shared with ProPakistani.
SNGP
The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGP) reported the bulk of incidents, with 2,704 accidents across its network. These incidents led to an estimated loss of 350.17 million cubic feet (MMCF) of gas.
The breakdown shows Abbottabad as the most affected region with 635 incidents, followed by Islamabad (563), Multan (348), Peshawar (310), Rawalpindi (245), Gujrat (65), Bahawalpur (53), Karachi (93), Lahore East (95), Sargodha (129), and other regional zones including Faisalabad, Sukkur, and Mardan.
Among high-loss zones, Multan recorded 72 MMCF of gas loss, followed by Karachi with 74.82 MMCF, Islamabad with 55.86 MMCF, and Rawalpindi with 59 MMCF, highlighting severe operational and third-party damage impacts in major urban centers.
SSGC
The Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) reported 40 incidents during the same period, with an estimated cumulative financial loss of Rs. 156.9 million.
SSGC’s breakdown includes major incidents such as pipeline ruptures, theft clamp cases, leaks, and sabotage. The most significant loss, Rs. 20.3 million, was recorded due to a rupture of an 18-inch pipeline caused by rain and landslide activity.
Another major incident involving third-party damage resulted in losses of Rs. 119.9 million across multiple cases, while sabotage accounted for Rs. 48.8 million in damage.
Other reported incidents included theft clamps on high-pressure pipelines, leakage in Quetta and Karachi routes, and structural failures across key transmission sections.
The majority of incidents in both SNGP and SSGC systems are linked to third-party interference, excavation damage, and unauthorized activities near pipeline infrastructure.
