PM Orders FBR To Record All Official Interactions During Market Visits

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials to ensure the on-spot-recording of all of their official interactions with traders during their visit to the markets.

Chairing a briefing on the performance and reforms in the FBR, the prime minister said that the elimination of corruption from the FBR and its reformation is the government’s priority.

The Prime Minister said that the revival of public trust in the FBR will help broaden the tax net.

Revenue Collection

Briefing the prime minister about the performance of the FBR during the previous fiscal year, Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi said that the board has collected Rs. 579 billion revenue until August of the current fiscal year, witnessing an increase of 14.65% as compared with Rs. 505 billion collected in the same period last year.

The income tax collection has reached Rs. 188 billion this year. Whereas the sales tax has reached Rs. 264 billion, with the custom collection recorded at Rs. 97 billion.

The prime minister was apprised that a 28% increase had been registered in the domestic tax collection.

Broadening of the tax base

The total number of filers has increased by over 783,000, taking the total number to 2.561 million in 2018 as compared to 1.514 million in 2017, including the numbers from the tax amnesty scheme.

Total Tax Return Filers

A growth of 69.1% was seen in the total number of tax filers in the tax year 2018.

The FBR chairman said all the phases including registration, issuance of tax certificates, filing of tax returns and audit were being automated to exclude the involvement of FRB officials in these processes.

The prime minister was told that in collaboration with NADRA, the FBR has launched a web portal to enable every individual to get online access to the financial details reaching FBR from various institutions.

The effectiveness of the online complaint resolution has also been enhanced to ensure immediate disposal of the complaints against the FBR officials.

Informing the prime minister about the FBR’s steps to ensure ease of doing business, tax refunds worth Rs 16 billion have been made and another Rs. 17 billion will be refunded by end of the current month.

Facilitation measures

The taxation system for shopkeepers and retailers is being eased even further. While a mobile application ‘Tax Asaan’ has been launched to facilitate the taxpayers. The tax forms have been translated into Urdu, while the Urdu version of the FBR website will be launched in the future.

The active taxpayers’ list is regularly updated to avoid any difficulty to the filers.

Regarding the facilitation of trade, the FBR chief said that the export sector was being facilitated through the ‘Easy Export’ scheme. Scanners have been installed at various custom stations and the customs facility was available round the clock at Torkham Border.

The customs operations at Kartarpur Corridor will start within the next few weeks, he added.

The FBR Chairman told the prime minister that the FBR teams were visiting the markets to spread awareness about the online registration of imported mobile phones, currency declaration systems at airports and advance passenger information systems.
