Man Dies Due to a Car’s Remote Start Feature

Technological advancements are meant to serve mankind. However, new or untested tech products may often not work as intended.

One such incident occurred in New York on December 6 when a man lost his life after being crushed by an unoccupied car that was started through remote control.

21-year-old Michael Kosanovich was standing between two 2002 Lexus IS300s parked next to each other when the owner of one of the cars started it through the remote control. The car sped forward crushing Kosanovich in between the cars.

Passers-by ran to pull Kosanovich out but the Lexus sped forward once more and crushed him again.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Michael was rushed to the hospital with severe trauma to his legs and torso. Kosanovich succumbed to injuries and died the next day.

At the time of the incident, Michael was inspecting the vehicle intending to buy it. Sadly, the vehicle that he was looking to buy led to his death, read the statement from NYPD.

Spokesperson of Toyota Motor North America said:

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Michael Kosanovich. Although many details are unknown at this time, we have reached out to local law enforcement to offer support in the investigation.

Lexus did not offer a factory-installed remote start in 2002 IS models, clarified the spokesperson. It seems the owner of the car fitted the remote start option after buying it.
