Pakistan’s First Coronavirus Patient Donates Plasma

Yahya Jafri was the first coronavirus patient reported in Pakistan on February 26. The 22-year-old had carried the virus on his return from Iran.

Luckily, he was one of the first patients to have recuperated from the disease. As the country moves towards, plasma therapy to recover COVID-19 patients, Jafri was the first one to donate his plasma.

After approval from the Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP), his plasma will be transferred to virus-infected patients to boost their immune system.

For that unaware, plasma is a liquid that remains after removing red and white blood cells and platelets from the blood.

As per experts, plasma of the recovered patients is believed to have developed an antibody that resists coronavirus. When transfer to immune-compromised patients, it boosts their immune system and help them recover fast. The technique was first successfully tested by Chinese doctors earlier this year.

Dr. Saqib Anasri, a Haematologist in Karachi, had asked Sindh government to allow him to try plasma technique. The permission was granted.

When Ansari contacted Jafri, he agreed to be part of the experiment and donated his blood samples for plasma extraction, Dr. Saqib told in a presser.

Dr. Ansari said the youngster came along with his family to donate blood, which is appreciable.
