Pakistan Ranked as Most Improved Country in Nuclear Security Index 2020

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) has ranked Pakistan as the most improved country for nuclear security measures in its Nuclear Security Index 2020.

The leading watchdog said that Pakistan improved its score by 7 points overall with a marked improvement in Security and Control Measures category mainly due to newly implemented regulations in the country. The country’s ranking in this category is steadily increasing over the years.

Pakistan has steadily improved in the Security and Control Measures category over time with the passage of new regulations, improving by +8 in 2014, +2 in 2016, and +6 in 2018.

Pakistan’s scores for ‘Theft: Secure Materials’ in different categories are listed below:

  • Quantities and sites – 19
  • Security and control measures – 57
  • Global norms – 45
  • Domestic commitment and capacity – 89
  • Risk environment – 16

The overall score stood at 47, which shows an improvement of 7 points from 2018. The 2020 rank for Pakistan is 19th as per the latest report. On the other hand, the scores on ‘Sabotage: Protect Facilities’ is as follows:

  • Number of sites – 80
  • Security and control measures – 56
  • Global norms – 58
  • Domestic commitment and capacity – 89
  • Risk environment – 16

Pakistan is ranked at 33rd place in the latest rankings with an overall score of 58. There is a difference of 5 points in this category from 2018.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Asad Majeed, said:

We welcome that NTI categorizes Pakistan as the most improved country for nuclear security measures in its Nuclear Security Index 2020. Pakistan’s improvement is also the second-largest ever by a country since the NTI Index was launched in 2012.
