Counterpoint Research’s latest report on the smartphone industry has arrived and once again, Samsung led the charge in terms of sales in August 2020 and increased its lead over Chinese rival Huawei. The Korean phone maker secured 22% of the global market share in the period, up from 20% in April.

While Samsung gained a 2% market share, Huawei lost 5% as compared to April where it once had a record-breaking 21% share.
Smartphone makers suffered a decline during the early months of summer/spring particularly due to India going into lockdown. Samsung made a comeback in between July and August once the market was opened again and the increasing tension between Indian customers and Chinese products also worked in the company’s favor.
This helped Samsung achieve one of its best months in India since 2018 with aggressive online marketing and more.
Other companies mostly maintained their market share. Apple kept its 12% share from April – August, though we expect the number to rise going into the last quarter of the year as the iPhone 12 has just been revealed. The previous best selling Apple phones, namely the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 are expected to maintain steady sales till then.
Xiaomi’s market share increased during the period and it is expected to keep growing with Huawei’s decreasing market share and also thanks to new Xiaomi devices releasing in the near future.
