Imported Sugar May Reduce Prices by Rs. 15-20 Per KG

The federal government has imported more than 100 tonnes of sugar which will reduce the price of the commodity by 15 to 20 rupees per kilogram, said the Minister for Industries and Production, Hammad Azhar, while addressing a joint news conference with the Minister for National Food Security, Syed Fakhar Imam, and the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Syed, Shibli Faraz, in Islamabad on Friday.

Azhar said that over one hundred tons of imported sugar has arrived at Karachi Port, of which 40,000 tonnes has been released to the Government of Punjab to be provided at controlled rates.

He added that the sugar mills have also assured authorities that they will start the crushing season early as they had decided to attempt to reduce the prices of sugar in the domestic market.

Regarding the shortage of wheat, Syed Fakhar Imam said 1.8 million tons of the food staple will be imported by January next year. He added that the private sector has imported 2,20,000 tonnes of wheat so far.

In response to a question, Syed Shibli Faraz clarified that the Government of Pakistan does not intend to privatize Pakistan Television (PTV).
