Huawei has been testing different forms of foldable devices over the past year, most of which were uncovered through design patents. Some resembled the Galaxy Fold and some were more like the Motorola Razr, but the latest one shows a complex hinge design that aims to eliminate the crease on foldable screens.

The patent was filed last year but was only published last month, meaning that it is older than any of the previously seen foldable smartphones. This complex hinge design aims to eliminate creases and it achieves so by using a modular design.

This OLED panel is able to contract and expand once the phone is shut and opened to prevent the screen from being completely folded once the device is closed. If implemented correctly, it will provide a crease-free foldable experience that is yet to be seen on most foldable phones.
The images below demonstrate how it works.

That being said, the new hinge mechanism is implemented on a clamshell foldable similar to the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr, meaning that if it does become reality, it will likely be a different lineup from Huawei’s currently available Mate X phones.
