Lahore Traffic Police has fined 31,292 vehicles that had been causing air pollution in the city. The authorities stated that about Rs. 7 million worth of challans have been issued to the motorists driving heavy smoke emitting vehicles and that the action against such vehicles has been intensified over the past few days.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Hammad Abid, said that the traffic wardens have issued challans of Rs. 2,000 to over 223 vehicle owners. He added that the authorities have also confiscated 53 vehicles that were potentially contributing to smog.

The CTO said that the pollution created by the smoke emitting vehicles contribute heavily to smog. The government has directed the authorities to take action against such vehicles, he added. The top official claimed that these efforts have resulted in a considerable improvement in air quality.
Recently, Lahore was ranked as the second-most polluted city in the world according to the Switzerland-based real-time air-quality monitoring platform IQAir. The city’s air quality was termed ‘hazardous’ with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 430. As per the report, Lahore was only behind New Delhi which was ranked at number 1 with an AQI score of 719.
