China has a high demand for beef which is why efforts are being made to introduce Pakistani beef in China. For this, the quarantine authorities in Beijing are expected to visit Pakistan to observe the local slaughterhouses.

Akhtar explained,

Because Pakistan is not very advanced in slaughter technology and farming, with the help of Chinese investors in Pakistan, they can secure disease-free animals and introduce modern techniques of slaughtering and preservation of meat and the cold chain.

As this is a new development, a number of businesses are interested but they need to find the right partners who are familiar with the local environment. Additionally, the export of fresh products requires the construction of supporting facilities like cold storage.

The President of the Pakistan Sichuan Chamber of Commerce (PSCC), Li Hongwu, said,

To export Pakistani beef to China, the most difficult issue is the FMD. The breeding conditions there do not meet our requirements.

Li Hongwu added that the member companies of the PSCC had intended to visit Pakistan at the beginning of 2020 to initiate the entire beef export chain from the breeding to the marketing but the plans had been halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The breeding industry in Pakistan is still at a primitive stage, without large-scale and modernization. To meet the export standards, we can provide technical guidance and equipment and open the export market, but we still need to cooperate with many local companies, since we can not bring workers from China. There is still a long way to go.

Another report has revealed that Pakistan’s exports to China increased by 30 percent in November, resulting in an improved trade balance between the countries.
