Pakistan Has the Highest Population Growth Rate in South Asia

On Wednesday, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives, Asad Umar, said that Pakistan is the fastest growing population in South Asia as its annual population growth rate has reached 2.8%.

While addressing a recent virtual Dissemination Seminar on Population Analysis, the minister noted that Pakistan became the fifth most populous country earlier this year.

According to the latest figures, Pakistan’s population increased by six times between 1950 and 2020, making it the most populated country in the world after China, India, the United States, and Indonesia.

While underscoring the importance of population control, the Minister said that population control in Pakistan should have gained momentum much earlier.

He reminded the seminar’s participants that one of the key areas of the PTI Manifesto is to tackle the population growth challenge.

The minister added that the federal government is committed to implementing measures to reduce the population growth rate for the health of mothers, children, and families and the prosperity of Pakistan by reducing the impending burden on its resources.

He said the government is also making efforts to revive the national family planning programs.

While calling for inter-provincial harmony on the subject, the minister stressed that provincial goals and targets must be aligned to national goals as it would allow Pakistan to fulfill its commitments made under the United Nations SDGs.
