PIAF Concerned Over Car Prices & Illegal Premiums

The Pakistan Industrial and Traders Association Front (PIAF) has urged the government to devise a mechanism to monitor the automotive sector in terms of product quality and prices while considering the interests of both the stakeholders and the consumers.

This action has been taken because of the rising prices of the vehicles despite the recent appreciation of the local currency against the US dollar.

As per reports, the PIAF Chairman, Mian Nauman Kabir, remarked in his address that the local automakers keep on increasing the prices of their cars whenever they desire without consulting the concerned authorities. He added that the prices of cars had gone up by 40 to 50 percent in the past couple of years but no one has bothered to question the automakers about their pricing strategies.

Kabir added that the Engineering Development Board (EDB), which reports to the Ministry of Industries & Production about the ongoing quality control measures and standards, must formulate a new auto policy following the expiration of the current one, and that it should secure the interests of both the customers and the assemblers.

He also stressed that the concerned departments of the governments should put the automotive sector under strict observation to rectify its pricing strategies and eradicate the illegal premiums and the ‘on money’ culture.

The PIAF is part of a hot debate on the reformation of the Pakistani auto industry. Although the Auto Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21 has allowed for the influx of many new competitors into the market, currently only speculations can be made about how the government will follow up on this progress.
