Sony Partners With Oppo Again to Develop Find X3’s Camera

Oppo was the first to introduce Sony’s new IMX766 camera sensor with the Reno 5 Pro+ 5G. Now a new report claims that the two companies are looking to keep their partnership going and will be working together on a new camera sensor for the Oppo Find X3 flagship series.

This camera sensor will be called the IMX789 and it will be temporarily exclusive to the Oppo Find X3 before getting to other manufacturers. Judging by its name, the IMX789 will likely be a direct successor to the IMX689, the camera sensor found on the Oppo Find X2.

The IMX689 is 11.2 mm in size, which is massive for a smartphone. It is a 48MP sensor with a Quad Bayer filter, which means that it is capable of outputting 12 million 2.24 µm pixels. It also has various other impressive specifications and we expect to see incremental improvements on the IMX789.

The IMX789 may have improved processing power and maybe the number of pixels will grow even higher. Perhaps we will get to see another manufacturer with a 108MP camera sensor. However, it remains to be seen whether the camera will be reserved for the Oppo Find X3 Pro, or will it feature on the base Find X3 as well. Who knows, we may even get to see an Oppo Find X3 Pro+.
