LG’s Upcoming”QNED TVs” Promise Better Colors, Contrast And HDR Capabilities

Korean tech giant LG is one of the biggest digital display makers worldwide similar to Samsung and TCL. Just like its competitors, the company is constantly working on improving its display technology with an emphasis on TVs.

The company is adopting the new Mini LED technology for its upcoming premium 8K and 4K LCD TVs. This technology allows for much greater contrast and colors thanks to a much smaller, but higher number of LEDs in the backlight.

LG claims that its new backlight has up to a whopping 30,000 tiny LEDs that are able to produce a peak brightness and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 as well as improved dimming zones. This translates into better color accuracy, better contrast, and more dynamic HDR compared to previous iterations.

The company is branding these upper-end LCDs as “QNED” where the Q stands for Quantum Dot technology and the N is likely for LG’s NanoCell branding. This may create a bit of confusion for consumers as they will have to choose between OLED, QLED, and QNED TVs in the market.

We are likely to see these new QNED TVs once Mini LED TVs start to become commonplace in the market. They will definitely cost a fortune but more competition from Samsung, TCL, Sony, etc will gradually bring down the price tags. LG is planning to launch these QNED TVs at CES 2021, scheduled to begin on January 11.
