Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has set a new record for operating an international flight with just one passenger on Sunday.
The flight from Islamabad to Manchester on a plane that has a capacity for 371 people departed with only one passenger besides the plane crew, turning the flight into a chartered one for the passenger from Gujrat.
The news of the almost empty flight comes when PIA is cutting on expenses for its revival. Last month, it had introduced the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) which was availed by 2,000 of its employees.
A spokesperson for the airline said that the reduction in workforce is crucial for PIA to execute its business plan.
“The response was very encouraging, and we reduced nearly 20 percent of our regular workforce,” he said.
The spokesperson added that PIA will save around Rs 2.5 billion from the iterations and that the payback on investment will be in two years.
