Apple Patents a MacBook Wireless Charging Dock

Recently, Patently Apple revealed that the iPhone maker has applied for 40 patent cases in two papers. According to the publication, Apple is considering incorporating wireless charging coils into its MacBooks. The coils will work two ways, which means it will be used to charge the MacBook as well as to charge other devices using the MacBook.

This idea is most likely another trick up Apple’s sleeve to create an entire ecosystem of products. The diagrams in the documentation show a MacBook charging an Apple watch and an iPhone which hints at how Apple wants to make its products inter-dependent so that they are more efficient when they work together.

While explaining the tech that will be used, the patent reads,

A portable electronic device comprising: an enclosure having a back surface and defining an opening opposite from the back surface; a display positioned within the opening of the enclosure; a first inductive coil and a second inductive coil positioned separate from the first inductive coil, both the first inductive coil and the second inductive coil being positioned within the enclosure and between the display and the back surface of the enclosure, and operable to wirelessly transmit power to, or receive power from, an external device positioned proximate to the enclosure; and a first alignment component positioned adjacent to the first inductive coil and a second alignment component positioned adjacent to the second inductive coil, wherein the first alignment component is arranged in a first configuration, and the second alignment component is arranged in a second configuration different from the first configuration.

Even though it would require a powerful wireless charger to make this choice commercial, this is an intriguing idea. If Apple decides to move forward with it, the MacBook will not be the first laptop to adopt wireless charging. The first laptop with wireless charging was Dell Latitude 7285 in 2017.
