Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan announced that his government is introducing special courses in schools to teach students the often underestimated significance of forests and trees and the dangers deforestation poses to the atmosphere, causing human-triggered climate change.
The premier spoke at the inauguration ceremony of the spring plantation drive and warned that global warming and greenhouse gas emissions are a threat to the country, especially because Pakistan is amongst the top 10 most vulnerable countries.

The PM stressed the need to plant forests and trees as it is the need of the hour and it is time to take action.
He observed that the perilous consequences of deforestation are evident in Lahore.
The PM said, “As a child, I grew up in Lahore. It was called the garden city at that time,” however today almost 70 percent of trees in the provincial capital have been cut”.
He highlighted the harmful effects of pollution in cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar especially for children and the elderly.

Consequently, to resolve this issue, the government has selected 50 spots in Lahore and 20 in Islamabad for the plantation of trees.
“We have adopted Japan’s Miyawaki technique through which forests grow faster,” the PM revealed.
“The only thing a government can do is provide funds but the implementation lies in your hands,” the premier said urging youngsters to join the initiative.
