Oppo Demoes “Air Charging” Technology at MWC Shanghai

In July last year, Oppo introduced its Air charging technology for the first time and now, at the ongoing MWC Shanghai, it has officially demoed a prototype of how the Air charger works. The all-new technology was showcased along with the Oppo X 2021 in a short 30-second video.

According to the video, the Oppo Air Charging tech can charge the device at all times. Even if it is lying flat on the surface or is placed at an arm’s length away without any physical contact with the charging pad.

The company has not revealed much detail regarding the implementation of the technology but a well-known tipster Digital Chat Station claims Oppo’s air charging speeds can reach up to 7.5W.

The company also hinted at a similar tech called FreeVOOC in April last year. At that time the implementation was touted to achieve stable charging power of 5-10W within 10 meters. It relied on special embedded coils in the phone itself. However, the air charging technology that has been demoed is different. Hence, it remains to be seen how the new implementation works and when we will be able to see it in a commercially available form.

In other news, Xiaomi also recently introduced a True wireless charging system that can charge compatible devices from across the room. It relies on a large cube transmitter that beams up to 5W of power to the devices in the vicinity.
