On Thursday 5th March 2021, detailed specifications of Samsung’s rugged Galaxy Xcover surfaced online. Now, the company has quietly unveiled the smartphone in Belgium. It has been specifically designed for military personnel and workers in the field. Specification-wise, the device falls in the entry-level tier.
Design and Display
As expected, the smartphone comes with a shock-absorbent cover that bounces back after falls from 1.5m (5 ft). The device also comes with an IP68 rating and is MIL-STD810H certified. This means it can spend over 30 minutes below 1m of water and is completely sealed against dust. Moreover, it can endure falls as well.
The handset is built around a 5.3-inch LCD with 720p+ resolution. Unlike other rugged handsets by the company, this smartphone is sleek. It measures 147.1 x 71.6 x 9.2 mm.
Internals and Storage
The device is powered by the Exynos 850 chipset topped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB storage. The software front is handled by One UI 2.0 flavored Android 11 with all the Knox security features.
Samsung has collaborated with a number of companies to provide integration usable in a wide variety of business scenarios. The smartphone comes with a push-to-talk function that allows you to use it as a walkie-talkie with the Microsoft Teams app. Moreover, the Xcover Key can be customized to launch any app you like.
The phone is also equipped with NFC, which can be used as a transportation card to help workers commute to work. Depending on the region, the phone will be available in single and dual SIM variants.
Cameras
In terms of cameras, the handset is equipped with a 16 MP single sensor setup on the back and a 5 MP lens on the front. With the Samsung Knox Capture feature, the rear camera turns into an enterprise-grade barcode scanner. The selfie camera, on the other hand, can be used for biometric security.
Battery and Pricing
The Samsung Xcover packs a user-replaceable 3000 mAh battery. It can be charged through the USB-C port at 15W or using a cradle that connects to the two pogo pins.
The smartphone will be available for sale later today in Belgium and will cost €290.
