Shortage of Wheat and Sugar in Ramadan Imminent

The federal government is anticipating a shortage of sugar and wheat during the month of Ramadan, and the Trading Corporation of Pakistan has re-issued tenders for the import of sugar and wheat in order to overcome the looming crisis.

The tenders were floated after the Ministry of Food Security requested the import of 300,000 tonnes of wheat, but the first tender was canceled due to a high bid.

Similarly, the first tender for 50,000 metric tonnes of sugar for utility stores was also withdrawn due to an expensive bid which was re-issued on Monday.

Earlier, the Sugar Mills Association had warned that after the increase in the per capita prices of sugarcane, the price of sugar is likely to exceed Rs. 100 per kg again.

On the other hand, the Government of Sindh has released the poultry mafia once again, owing to which the price of chicken has skyrocketed across the province. As of today (Tuesday), chicken meat is being sold at Rs. 480 per kg while the official rate is Rs. 214 per kg.
