In October last year, Huawei announced its flagship Mate 40 series. Now, almost four months after the launch, the company has quietly rolled out the Mate 40E as the fifth model in the Mate 40 family. Specifications-wise, the handset sits between the vanilla model and the Mate 40 Pro.
Design and Display
Featuring a form factor similar to other Mate 40 handsets, the smartphone is built around a 6.5-inch OLED display with 1080p resolution, a punch hole in the top left corner, 90 Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. The fingerprint sensor is mounted underneath the display.
The Huawei Mate 40 comes with an IP53 rating and will be available in three colors: White, Black, and Sky Blue.
Internals and Storage
Under the hood, the new Mate 40 handset comes with Kirin 990E SoC topped with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB onboard storage.
In terms of software, it runs Android 10-based EMUI 11 out of the box. The device also comes with 5G support, 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC, Wi-Fi 6+, dual-band GPS, air gestures, and stereo speakers.
Cameras
Like the other smartphones in the series, the Mate 40E 5G features a circular camera island that includes a 64 MP primary lens complemented by an 8 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 16 MP ultrawide unit. The last unit is a laser focus sensor. The camera system has been developed in partnership with the German camera company LEICA.
For selfies, it sports a 13 MP single sensor shooter.
Battery and Pricing
The handset packs a 4200 mAh battery that supports 40W fast charging as well as 40W wireless charging. It also comes with reverse wireless charging but speed details for this have not been revealed by Huawei.
The Huawei Mate 40E 5G will go on sale in China from March 18 with the base variant costing $705.
