TikTok Committed to Continue Serving Millions of Users in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has ordered internet service providers to block access to the world-famous TikTok application in Pakistan after the Peshawar High Court (PHC) directed local authorities to block it over ‘immoral content’.

TikTok welcomed the PTA’s decision as a challenge and argued that it has its own guidelines to monitor content. It said, “TikTok is built upon the foundation of creative expression, with strong safeguards in place to keep inappropriate content off the platform”.

“In Pakistan, we have grown our local-language moderation team, and have mechanisms to report and remove content in violation of our community guidelines. We look forward to continuing to serve the millions of TikTok users and creators in Pakistan who have found a home for creativity and fun,” it added.

The PTA had temporarily banned TikTok in October last year over similar allegations, claiming that the platform had failed to filter out “immoral and indecent” content.

The ban was lifted 10 days later after TikTok’s management promised to “block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality”.

Tiktok is hugely popular among Pakistan’s population of 220 million people, and reportedly has more than 20 million active monthly users. Popular Pakistani users on the platform have follower counts in millions.
