Govt to Remove HEC Chairman Under New Ordinance

The federal government is removing the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman, Dr. Tariq Banuri, and replacing him under the new ordinance and alteration in HEC rules and regulations.

The Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) has approved the new ordinance, according to which the HEC Chairman’s tenure will now be two years. Previously, the HEC Chairman was appointed for a period of four years.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will give the final approval for the promulgation of the new ordinance, following which the matter will be placed on the next cabinet meeting’s agenda which is scheduled on 30 March.

The cabinet committee also proposed to remove the top brass of HEC under the new ordinance.

The CCLC meeting was chaired by Minister for Law and Justice, Farogh Naseem, and attended by Minister for Human Rights, Dr. Shireen Mazari, Minister for Narcotics Control, Muhammad Azam Swati, Minister for Science and Technology, Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Minister for Education, Shafqat Mahmood, PM’s Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Zaheer ud Din Babar Awan, PM’s Advisor on Accountability and Interior, Mirza Shahzad Akbar, amongst others.
