Closing Schools Will be a Difficult Decision – Shafqat Mahmood

The Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, Shafqat Mahmood, has stated that closing schools will be a difficult decision to take as many students across Pakistan are unhappy with online classes, and the final decision will be taken on 24 March after a detailed review of the pandemic situation.

He announced this at a press conference at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry where he also discussed the drawbacks of online education.

“The Ministry of Education wants that the educational institutions should remain open, and we took a number of steps during COVID-19,” he said.

The minister also noted the difference between in-person and online classes and said that the closing of schools will not be an easy decision to make.

He added that the government will soon introduce a uniform syllabus across Pakistan and, “there were some reservations by Sindh but we are working on them”.

Minister Mahmood had declared earlier that the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic is serious and that the education sector requires careful deliberations in this regard.

“All education and health ministers will meet Wednesday, March 24 at the NCOC to take a decision regarding opening or further closure of educational institutions,” he said.
