Japan Considers Provision of Cultural Grant Assistance to Taxila Museum

In consideration of the request of the Tourism Department of the Government of the Punjab, the Government of Japan is considering providing cultural grant assistance for the improvement of the equipment for the exhibitions at and conservation in the Taxila Museum which stores the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Gandhara civilization.

Development consultants from Japan visited Pakistan between 15 March and 3 April for this purpose despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in conducting onsite research and hearings.

Based on a series of discussions and onsite surveys in the museum, the consultants identified the equipment needed for the better exhibition and conservation of excavated items from Gandharan archaeological sites.

While admiring the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Gandhara civilization in Taxila, the Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, Matsuda Kuninori, remarked that the Japanese onsite research team’s visit is crucial in paving the way for seeking approval of cultural grant assistance from the Japanese government.

“With the post-corona world in sight, Japan supports Pakistan in promoting the exhibition and conservation of the Gandhara Buddhist heritage and attract more tourists to Pakistan in the future,” he said.

The ambassador added that Pakistan has great potential for tourism and that the ancient Gandhara civilization is very close to the heart of the Japanese people.
