Govt Ends HEC Autonomy With New Ordinance

As part of its measures to formally end the autonomy of the Higher Education Commission, the federal government has decided to bring it under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education.

The federal Cabinet has approved the new Ordinance, 2021 under which all the decisions of the HEC will be subject to approval from the Ministry of Education.

The ordinance, which has been renamed the ‘HEC Amendment Ordinance, 2021’, will be approved by President Arif Alvi. According to it, the tenure of the Chairman will now be two years, and the tenure of each member of the HEC will be four years.

The government has already dismissed Dr. Tariq Banuri as the Chairman of the HEC with the implementation of the ordinance.

The HEC was established in 2002 as an autonomous body to maintain the quality of education without political intervention.
