In a historic step for the country towards achieving a polio-free status, Lahore has become the first city in Pakistan to rid itself of the virus.
Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner revealed the news while talking to journalists, claiming that surveyors had taken environmental samples for the poliovirus from different parts of the city five times and that these samples had tested negative every time.
The DC commended the contributions of the doctors, polio workers, and parents for their contribution to the achievement of the outstanding feat.

On 29 March, the government had initiated a nationwide polio eradication drive to vaccinate a target of 40 million children below the age of five, and more than 3.5 million children had been vaccinated by 3 April.
The government stated that more than 290,000 polio workers had been stationed across the country for the drive during which the COVID-19 protocols had been adhered to strictly and security officers had accompanied the workers on duty.
